Lindsay Day 1 That was an interesting introduction when the author was talking about how his father had left and how he already wanted him to come back one more time. The setting was probably in the late 1700's because they had to build a log cabin, and they had to chop down trees down themselves. It's not common now because you usually hire someone to build your house. Most houses are usually made from bricks or stone. Seven weeks is a long time to be gone! Matt's father's grammar/speech is worse than a first grader! I think "Sign of the Beaver" is a lot like "Hatchet" because they have to survive on their own. Some differences are that in Hatchet, Brian didn't have a shelter and Matt did. Matt didn't have to make a rifle or anything because he already had it, and Brian had to make his. This book has many man versus nature in it like Hatchet did. For example, when Matt was fighting against the mosquitoes and Brian did too. I think this book seems like one most boys would enjoy, but I like it too. I found a simile on page 9 and 10, "The two men had nodded to each other gravely, and lifted a hand in salute, exactly as if they had been two deacons passing in the town square."
